SURFACE / POSITION
Instructions & updates
In development · Version 5 · 16 October 2026

A simple, informal tool for practising anatomical descriptions. Made in the spirit of shared learning — explore, have a go, and check the wording. Ben is an illustrative virtual practice patient, not a precise anatomical model.

A location, in the right words

Point. Locate. Describe.

Meet Ben, your virtual practice patient. Turn the model and tap a spot to practise describing its position. Right and left always mean Ben’s right and left.

Three steps to get going

  1. Choose your view. Drag Ben to turn or tilt him, or use Front, Back and the side buttons.
  2. Pick a spot. Tap or click the body. Use Face, Hand or Foot for a close-up; pinch, scroll or use the Zoom slider.
  3. Read and check. The description appears beside Ben (below him on smaller screens). Check the marker and patient’s side, then edit or copy the wording for your learning notes.
More help: zoom, landmarks and keyboard controls
  • Move a close-up: choose “Pan / move” under Drag mode, then drag. On a computer you can also hold Shift while dragging.
  • Centre a location: select it and choose “Selected spot”, or double-click it. “Whole body” or Reset restores the starting view.
  • Inspect a foot: choose a foot close-up, then “Top of foot” or “Sole of foot”.
  • Refine a boundary: open “Refine the location”, choose the region, side and surface, then Apply selection. These controls also provide a keyboard alternative to pointing.
  • Add a landmark: select a spot, open “Add a measured landmark”, search the dropdown and choose a direction. Enter a distance only if you have actually measured it, or choose “at”. Ben cannot measure centimetres.
  • No marker? tap directly on the body, rather than the background. Reset if you lose your place.
  • On a phone or iPad: use one finger to turn and two fingers to pinch-zoom. Scroll down to find the wording and help.
